Michael Loman (BFA Musical Theatre) is performing for Carnival Cruises and then plans to move to NYC.
Alex Belli (BFA Musical Theatre) is performing at the Barter Theatre in summer 2019 and then teaching English for a year in S. Korea. Alex plans to move to NYC to pursue performance opportunities.
Christina Yancy (BFA Acting) is Performing at Birmingham Children’s Theatre in summer 2019 and spending the next year at the Black Rep Theatre in St. Louis as an Acting Intern.
BA Lovelace (BFA Musical Theatre) is teaching English for a year in S. Korea and then plans to move to NYC to pursue performance opportunities.

Ashley Woodson (BFA Musical Theatre) performed professionally on educational tours and for the Red Mountain Theatre Company in AL in new works and “Little Shop of Horrors”; and is spending summer 2019 performing at the Priscilla Beach Theatre in Maine.
Tahauny Cleghorn (BFA Musical Theatre) is performing, teaching and choreographed professionally for Birmingham Children’s Theatre and performing for Red Mountain Theatre Company in various productions.
David Pohler (BFA Musical Theatre) performed professionally for Birmingham Children’s Theatre and recently moved to NYC to pursue performance opportunities.
Kelly Doherty (BFA Acting) has been studying acting full-time at the prestigious Michael Howard Studio in NYC and recently began pursuing professional voiceover work.
Megan Oliver (BFA Acting) has been acting professionally at Birmingham Children’s Theatre since graduation.
Jesse Byron (BFA Acting) has worked professionally as an actor at Birmingham Children’s Theatre as well as production positions at various organizations including the Birmingham Symphony; Red Mountain Theatre Company; and The Lost Colony (Jesse is also pursuing SAFD certification as an Actor-Combatant).

Michael Cleary (BFA Musical Theatre) has performed professionally with the Thunder Bay Theatre in Michigan; Red Mountain Theatre Company in Birmingham; and is currently performing at Dollywood in TN.
Shelley McMoy (BFA Musical Theatre) has worked professionally with Red Mountain Theatre Company and Birmingham; Children’s Theatre; and is currently performing at Dollywood in TN.
James Powers (BFA Musical Theatre) worked professionally at Birmingham Children’s Theatre and two summers at the Mountain Playhouse in PA where he became a member of AEA. James currently resides in NYC where he has performed with several classical Theatre companies.
Cassie Worrel (BFA Acting) continues to travel internationally extensively and moved to Los Angeles in fall 2016 where she is pursue acting and production opportunities.
Hannah Stephens (BFA Acting—December 2016) performed extensively in Birmingham while a student at UM and performed professionally as an actor touring with the Missoula Children’s Theatre. Hannah is now pursuing acting and directing opportunities in NYC.
Nick Stokes (BFA Acting—December 2016) worked professionally at the Mountain Playhouse in PA while a student at UM, where he became an Equity Membership Candidate (EMC), and has performed professionally in CO and various states around the U.S. since graduation.
Natalie Bonifay (BFA Musical Theatre-December 2016) performed extensively in Birmingham while a student at UM including professional work at the Birmingham Children’s Theatre. Natalie also taught dance in summer camps at BCT and at the Virginia Samford Theatre, is now pursuing arts administration and acting opportunities in NYC.
Technical/Design; Arts Administration
Ashton Irvin (BS Theatre 2019) is spending her 2nd summer at Stage Door Manor in NY as a master carpenter, and will be on tour during the 2019–2020 season.
Chase Knapstein (BS in Theatre 2019) is spending summer 2019 working professionally in Maine and then plans to pursue opportunities in technical theatre.
Mason Shell (BFA Technology and Design; Lighting Emphasis–2018) spent last season as a Lighting Fellow at the AL Shakespeare Festival and is pursuing professional opportunities as a lighting designer.
Shelby Mays (BA Theatre; Arts Administration minor) works in Company and Stage Management at the Serenbe Playhouse in GA and previously the Weston Playhouse, an AEA theatre in VT.
Ricky Umstead (BA Theatre-Tech) worked professionally as a student at UM for various companies in Birmingham including the Red Mountain Theatre Company before working at Alabama Shakespeare Festival as a lighting intern. Ricky recently received his MBA in Business and is pursuing opportunities in that field.
Monica Day (BA Theatre—Tech) worked as the Costume Designer for the Mountain Playhouse in PA during summer 2016, and resides in NYC.
Zoyla Elizabeth (BA Theatre and Spanish; Minor Arts Administration) worked as an actor, director, teacher, stagehand and in front of house areas during her time at UM. A transfer student, Zoyla returned to her native Los Angeles where she is pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
Katy Bedingfeld (BA Theatre-Tech) worked extensively in the costume and make-up areas at UM, and worked professionally in Birmingham on make-up and run crews including Red Mountain Theatre Company while a student. She is currently working professionally in Branson, MO.
Los Angeles/Western Region
EJ Wilson (BFA Technical Theatre/Stage Management Emphasis 2008) is working as an Assistant Stage Manager and Artistic Director of the Child Performers on the Beatles’ LOVE show by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas. EJ previously worked for Cirque on MICHAEL JACKSON THE IMMORTAL WORLD TOUR across the US and Europe and MYSTERE in Las Vegas, where he resides. He was also a stage management intern at the Orlando Shakespeare Festival in FL. In spring 2009, EJ was the recipient of a national award for excellence in Stage Management from USITT.
Jade Rice (BA December 2012) spent the summer of 2013 Artistic Administration intern at the Endstation Theatre in VA. While at Endstation, Jade also assistant directed their main stage production of CYMBELINE and acted in several new play readings as part of their National Playwrights Initiative. In summer 2015, she was a personal assistant and production assistant on the film remake of DIRTY DANCING in Asheville, NC. During her time at UM, Jade directed several new plays with the WCC and assistant directed RENT. Jade works consistently as a production and personal assistant on various film and TV projects in Albuquerque, NM, most recently “Daybreak” for Netflix. She is also a SAG eligible actor.
Will Hickman (BFA Acting/Directing 2004) toured the U.S. with Theatre IV and has acted and directed professionally in MS, NYC and Nebraska. He worked as an actor and fight combatant at the Navy Pier in Chicago and received his MFA in Acting at UCLA in California Will has acted professionally in Los Angeles and is currently teaching at Pasadena City College there as well.
Julian Robinson (BFA Acting/Directing 2002) worked in various production capacities at Mabou Mines and The Wooster Group, NYC, and received his M.F.A. program in Film Directing/Producing at Columbia University. Julian taught editing in San Francisco and also worked for Current TV, where he received an Emmy Nomination for his documentary work, as well as part of the team working on the recent UCF sports program AGENTS OF CHANGE. Julian currently works full-time as Supervising Producer/Director at Trium Entertainment in Los Angeles. At UM, Julian compiled extensive directing and assistant directing credits and also wrote and directed 3 College Night “Purple Side” musicals.
Jeff Speetjens (BFA, Acting/Directing 2005) directed several projects in NYC and currently resides in Los Angeles, where he has taught improvisation and directed for various theatre companies. Jeff is a professional puppeteer and performs at a cabaret owned by David Arquette, “Bootsy Bellows,” in Beverly Hills. Jeff also works as a production manager on film and has directed several music videos. His short film, THE YEAR THAT I WAS BORN, was screened at the Venice Film Festival, Italy and at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, France. While at UM, Jeff compiled extensive acting, assistant directing and directing credits.
Anna Elise Craig (BA, December 2012) also moved to Los Angeles shortly after graduation to pursue acting work in TV and Film.
Hunter Brown (BFA Musical Theatre 2015) worked as a professional actor at Birmingham Children’s Theatre and as a sound assistant at Red Mountain Theatre Company. Hunter has worked as an actor and in film production in Los Angeles, and is currently performing extensively in the San Diego area.
Stephanie Schnorbus (BFA Acting/Directing, 2005) worked as professional actor in Chicago for several years after graduation, including film, commercials and theatre Steph is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and relocated to San Francisco where she worked in arts administration and is currently employed by the Google Corporation.
Tim Hoobler (BFA, 2005) lived in NYC for many years where he performed improv sketch comedy and standup work, as well as film projects. He is now a writer in Los Angeles and has written the copy for several well known ads and commercials. Tim’s film MOUNT JOY was recently made available on Netflix.
Alexis August (BFA Acting/Directing, 2002) lives in Los Angeles where she has worked in television, film and commercials. While at UM, Alexis also double-majored in Mass Communication.
Louis Schultz (BA Theatre and BM, Music, 2002) is based in Los Angeles and has worked in various aspects of the music and film industry including recording and appearances on The Letterman Show with his band, Army Navy, and composing/editing for film. Louis recently received an Emmy nomination for his composing work on the HBO series “Vice Principals.” At UM, Louis was a theatre, guitar and music composition major.
Dino Spezzini (BA Theatre 2007) performed extensive with his improvisation comedy troupe and as a standup comic in Chicago. Dino moved to San Diego to pursue TV and film opportunities and continues to be active as a performer and teacher with improvisational companies there.
Emily Greene (BFA Acting/Directing, 2004) received a full teaching assistantship/scholarship to pursue an M.F.A. Degree in Scene Design at the University of Ohio. While at UM, Emily directed several productions and worked in all aspects of design and technical theatre. She has designed for professional theatres in San Francisco as well as film projects, and has worked for regional theatres such as Cincinnati Playhouse. Emily currently works for LAIKA films and has received industry recognition for work on their stop-animation films THE BOXTROLLS and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS.
New York
Elise Keller (Stage Management May 2015) resides in NYC where she has worked as an Assistant Stage Manager or Production Assistant at the Public Theatre, Epic Theatre, on THE WOODSMAN Off-Broadway and as the AEA Production Stage Manager during her 2nd season at the Mountain Playhouse in PA among other organizations.
Ashley Knowles (Stage Management December 2014) has worked on the Stage Management staff for 2 seasons at the Stagedoor Manor Arts Camp in NY and resides in NYC, where she works as the Ensemble Manager for TADA Youth Theatre.
Korey Wilson (BFA Musical Theatre 2014) is pursuing acting and writing opportunities in NYC. After graduating from NYC, Korey also worked as a professional performer for Birmingham Children’s Theatre.
Barrington McQueen (BFA Musical Theatre 2015) performed professionally with the Red Mountain Theatre Company in NYC while at UM, and acted with both Birmingham Children’s Theatre and Red Mountain in several shows after graduation including MARY POPPINS and SISTER ACT. Barrington is currently an AEA actor in NYC.
Jason Styres (BFA Acting/Directing 2006) was a casting assistant at Telsey + Co and a Casting Director at Jay Binder and Associates for several years, where he cast the 2015 Tony Award winning Broadway musical A GENTLEMEN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER, receiving a Casting Society of America “Artios” award for his work on the show. He also worked with the Broadway producers of FINIAN’S RAINBOW on the 2009 revival. In spring 2016, Jason started his own casting office working on theatre, film and commercial projects. At UM, Jason choreographed our main stage musicals GODSPELL and SIDE SHOW, and directed SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. He also played in and choreographed several College Night musicals, and served as Purple Leader 2006.
Megan Stein (BFA Acting/Directing 2008) spent 2 seasons as Laurie in OKLAHOMA in Discoveryland! and a year as a performance intern with Theatre on the Square in Memphis, where she received a local “Ostrander award” nomination for her work in THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED. Megan now resides in NYC where she is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has performed on episodic TV in THE BIG C, THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT and GIRLS, among others. Megan is a member of the sketch comedy troupe VERY BAD FRIENDS and also performs stand-up comedy. She is active as an editor and director on her web series and as Co-Executive Producer of Prash Productions, where she frequently collaborates with UM alums. Megan is also featured in the film SHITBIRD, directed by Bo McGuire, and she frequently directs and performs in web videos frequently for UCB Comedy, NYC.
Lindsey Bristol (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012) is a NYC based actor who also works as a Casting Assistant at Mungioli Theatricals Casting. She toured for a year in Jim Henson’s DINOSAUR EXPRESS directed by John Tartaglia of AVENUE Q fame and recently performed off-off-Broadway in DARK PLAY, as well as continuing summer seasons in New Hampshire. Lindsey also interned at Mungioli Casting in the summer of 2012 after moving to NYC following graduation.
Aaron Moore (BA Theatre 2013) is currently pursuing stand up and improv performance opportunities in NYC.
Tavi Juarez (BFA Acting 2013) earned membership in Actor’s Equity Association by working with Birmingham’s City Equity Theatre on AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY right after graduation. She resides in NYC where she attended the graduate program in Acting at the Circle in the Square Theatre Conservatory. Tavi has acted in various indie films and commercials and recently produced a “variety show” at the legendary downtown NYC venue Theater for a New City.
Sierra Michalkov (Theatre minor, 2013) moved to NYC in Fall 2013 where she is pursuing acting and directing/choreography opportunities. Sierra also studied massage therapy and Chinese Holistic medicine in NYC and works with singers and clients in these areas. A Vocal Performance Major and Theatre minor at UM, Sierra performed in numerous UM Theatre musicals and also choreographed 3 productions, including Stephen Sondheim’s ASSASSINS as well as College Night musicals. Sierra participated in our January 2011 and 2013 NYC Musical Theatre intensive.
Brett Glass (BFA Acting/Directing 2008) studied at the prestigious Dell’ Arte school for Physical Theatre in Northern CA and has worked at several downtown theatre venues in NYC. Brett is a freelance editor and has collaborated with many downtown theatres and organizations in NYC including La Mama etc. He was a co-producer of the SWEATER CLUB web based TV series with fellow UM alums and has directed, edited and performed in numerous web series and short film projects.
Carl Conway Maguire (BFA Acting/Directing 2008) performed as Father Martin at The Lost Colony Outdoor drama as well as lead roles in musicals such as SOUTH PACIFIC. In NYC, he was a casting intern with Arnold Mungioli Casting and performed a lead role in the new Off-Broadway musical THE NEW HOPEVILLE COMICS. Carl is also a playwright and screenwriter. More recently, Carl has been focusing on film as a writer, editor, director and occasional actor through his company Prash productions, as well as other collaborations with UM alums and Mystic Bridge Productions. Carl participated in our January 2010 NYC musical theatre intensive. Carl also works as a freelance editor in NYC.
Brad Holland performed in the Off-Broadway hit STOMP for over a decade. Brad has toured internationally with the show including a benefit in Rome with Quincy Jones, and performed with the STOMP cast and Paul Simon on the “Jimmy Fallon” show. Brad was cast from an open call while in his third year at UM (2002). He now active as an editor and in sound production.
Rachel Rehome (BFA Technical Theatre/Design, Costume Emphasis 2005) received her M.F.A. Degree in Costume Design from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has worked professionally at the American Players Theatre in Wisconsin and as an ongoing designer for various Off-Broadway productions in NYC, including the acclaimed Classical Theatre of Harlem. She is currently the resident costume designer at the New School in Manhattan. While at UM, Rachel designed several productions, including our main stage production of GODSPELL.
Logan Reid (BFA Acting 2011) worked regionally as a professional actor and on tour with Missoula Children’s Theatre. He also co-founded LoKa Theatre Company in Birmingham with fellow UM alum Karow Wilson. Logan was a casting assistant with Jim Carnahan and the Roundabout Theatre in NYC, and also worked at the Gersh Agency for two years before taking his current position at Boston Consulting Group.
Grant Bowen (BFA Musical Theatre 2011) is a NYC AEA actor and writer.
Tyree Walker (BFA Acting 2010) has performed regionally with New Stage Theatre Company in MS and NC Shakespeare Festival. He is currently a NYC based actor with two upcoming productions at companies in the city.
Stephen Elkins (BA Theatre and BM, Vocal Performance 2008) has composed several new short musicals, including SWEET TAY AND JESUS, at the Shortened Attention Span Festival at the Players Club in NYC. He has also presented his musical ACCEPTANCE at various venues in New York. Stephen performed in many musicals at UM and continues to act in NYC on occasion, as well as performances at clubs around the city with his bluegrass band. Stephen composed the score for 3 College Night productions before participating in the prestigious BMI workshop for professional musical theatre composers. Stephen’s musical PEDRO PAN, which he co-wrote with his wife and fellow alum Rebecca Aparicio, was presented at the summer 2015 prestigious international fringe festival in NYC, as well as the 2018 Musical Theatre Festival.
Rebecca Aparicio (BFA Musical Theatre and BA, Vocal Performance 2007) has performed in Stephen Elkins’ musicals in NYC as well as other venues in the Tri-State area and studied with noted actors Joanna Merlin and Randy Graff. As part of her expansive career, Rebecca worked in Development at Primary Stages and as a lyricist and book writer of new musicals. Her musical PEDRO PAN, which she co-wrote with her husband and fellow alum Stephen Elkins, was presented at the summer 2015 prestigious international fringe festival in NYC and 2018 Musical Theatre Festival. Rebecca has directed new works at numerous venues in NYC and is also the recipient of two SDC (Society of Directors and Choreographers) prestigious Observerships, where she assisted Tony Award winning director Diana Paulus on a new play by Emily Mann Off-Broadway. Most recently, Rebecca has been an Assistant Director at noted regional Theatres such as A.R.T. in Boston and the Long Wharf Theatre in CT; and will spend the 2019-2020 season as a Resident Director at the Off-Broadway Flea Theatre in NYC.
Jennifer Barnette (BA, 2000) received her M.A. in Arts Administration from Shenandoah University in VA. She is currently living in NYC and worked for many years as the Managing Director for the historic off-Broadway company the American Place Theatre. She is currently the Executive Director of the Garden Club, NYC.
Desmond Doye (BFA Acting/Directing 2003) spent a year as a member of the resident acting apprentice company with the Equity Orlando Shakespeare Festival and currently works in Arts Administration at Lincoln Center, NYC
Lindsay Taylor (BFA Acting/Directing 2007) performs in film and TV projects in NYC and also works as a photographer where her work has been featured frequently in NEW YORK magazine.
Cale Hughes (BA 2007) also works on TV and film projects in NYC and also frequently collaborates with UM theatre alums.
Carlton Hall (BFA Acting/Directing 2004) has worked in production at Theatre for a New City in NYC and has toured the US extensively performing with youth Theatre companies. Carlton is a seasoned juggler as well as performer.
Jarrod Zayas (BFA Acting/Directing 2003) acted professionally full-time with the Birmingham Children’s Theatre and has performed in the long running Off-Off Broadway play LINE in NYC, as well as with the Neo-Futurists. Jarrod was a co-producer and actor in the SWEATER CLUB, a web-based TV series created by several UM theatre alumni. He continues to act and direct indie TV and film projects in NYC, including recent acclaimed Off-OFF Broadway productions of DELIVERANCE and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST.
Regional U.S.
Katie Raulerson (BFA Musical Theatre 2015) performed professionally with the Birmingham Children’s Theatre and other venues in Birmingham, as well as choreographing THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at UM in fall 2015. Katie recently spent a year as an Acting Apprentice at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and is AEA eligible (and is residing in NYC again).
Bailey Gaskin (BFA Musical Theatre 2015) has worked professionally in FL and NYC and is currently an AEA performer at Universal Studio is FL.
Savannah Swafford (BFA Musical Theatre 2009) performed at Disneyworld in Florida after graduation and continues to perform in musical revues on tour internationally and around the US with Feld Entertainment. She is now a Yoga teacher and personal trainer in FL.
Malik Elliott (BFA Musical Theatre 2017) moved to FL right after graduation to perform at Disney and Universal Studios, and continues to work there as a professional actor.
Amber Chapman (BA Theatre, Arts administration minor May 2015) has been actively pursuing her career in Arts Administration since graduating from UM. She worked as an arts admin and company management intern At Maine State Music Theatre for two summers and spent the 2016-2017 season as a Development intern at the McCarter Theatre in NJ. Amber says: “Everyone is different. Some people choose big name schools, or conservatories, others kick off their careers without going to college. One thing I can say though is that I will be forever grateful for my liberal arts education. My education in the liberal arts setting of Montevallo taught me to focus not only on how to do what I do, but the reasons why I do what I do as well.”
Stephen Frausto (BFA Technical Theatre, Scenic and Costume Emphasis, December 2012) interned with NYC designer Emilio Sosa and has worked for several summers at the GA Shakespeare Festival in the Costume area, as well as on staff at the AL Shakespeare Festival and the Weston Playhouse in VT. He is currently the Technical Director NC State University. While at UM, Stephen designed sets and costumes for several productions, including THE HEIDI CHRONICLES.
HJ Farris (BFA Technical Theatre, Stage Management Emphasis 2012) has worked as in technical theatre and stage management at Dollywood, Stage Door Manor and Alabama Shakespeare Festival, where she was an Equity Stage Manager for 2 seasons. HJ was an AEA Stage Manager at Playmakers Rep Theatre in NC and most recently has been the Production Stage Manager at AL Shakespeare Festival.
Leah Craft (BA Theatre, 2013) was selected for a highly competitive internship with Jim Henson productions, NYC, in fall 2012 where she worked on puppets for the acclaimed TV show SESAME STREET. Leah has an extensive background in puppetry and mask work, and has continued to work on this area around the U.S.
Katie Dale (BFA Musical Theatre 2012) is currently working as an actor with the People Store Agency in Atlanta.
Trent Loggins (BFA Musical Theatre 2012) acted and toured professionally with the Birmingham Children’s Theatre after graduation, and performed in various musicals through 2014 at the Round Barn Theatre in Indiana. Trent has worked at the Seaside Rep Theatre in FL for several years as an actor and casting director, and is currently acting and on staff at the Palace Theatre in Wisconsin.
Landi McAdams (BFA Design/Technical Theatre, Costume Emphasis 2010) interned in NYC after graduation. She assisted NYC Costume Designers Cathy Parrott, Emilio Sosa and William Ivey Long on upcoming projects for 2nd Stage, the Public Theatre, and Manhattan Theatre Club in NYC, as well as the national tour of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. She has designed costumes for several productions at Synchronicity Theatre and Dad’s Garage Theatre in Atlanta and also works as a seamstress for Kennesaw State University.
Steven House (BFA Technical Theatre/Scenic Design Emphasis 2008) designed several main stage productions at Illinois State University, where he is received his MFA in Scenic Design. Steven spent 2 summers working for the prestigious Santa Fe Opera company. Steven was the resident Scenic Designer for Midland Theatre in Texas and taught in visiting faculty positions at UM and Northern AZ University. Steven is a resident designer at the Clinton Showboat summer theatre in Iowa and on the faculty at Western IL University, where he teaches scenic design. While at UM, Steven designed several productions including our main stage musical COMPANY.
Erin Parker Overstreet (BA Theatre 2007) worked in Stage and Production Management at the Olney Theatre Center in Baltimore, MD, as well as theatres in Washington, DC. She is currently the Managing Director for the nationally acclaimed experimental company Out of Hand Theatre in Atlanta as well as Business Manager at Humorology, Atlanta.
Madison Colquette (BA Theatre 2009) has worked in Arts Management at the Horizon and Synchronicity Space Theatres in Atlanta and enrolled in the MFA Program in Dramaturgy at the University of Iowa in Fall 2013. She recently received her MFA and is now on the FT dramaturgy staff at the prestigious O’ Neill Theatre Center in CT.
Marie Pope (BFA Acting/Directing 2010) performed at LINCOLN outdoor drama in Indiana and spent the 2010-2011 season as an acting intern at Cincinnati Playhouse, where she performed in mainstage productions and also worked as an Assistant Director. Also an accomplished poet and musician, Marie has performed in Cincinnati for several years and now resides in London.
Leslie Baird (BFA Acting/Directing 2009) acted in theatre and commercials in Chicago before moving to Nashville, where she teaches yoga and is a singer/songwriter. Leslie also majored in French and has studied and worked extensively in France.
Tabby Stott Burt (BFA Musical Theatre 2011) worked in theatre and film in Atlanta for 2 years before relocating to the Memphis area. Tabby taught educational musical theatre and voice at the Memphis Cultural Arts Center and currently resides with her family in Huntsville, AL.
Jennifer Richman (BA Theatre 2006) resides in Austin, Texas, where she has worked extensively in independent film and as a vocalist in a band, while also pursuing work in the cosmetology and make-up field.
Brian Mayberry (BA Theatre 2007) is pursuing an acting career in Atlanta and has performed professionally in a number of productions with Atlanta Shakespeare Festival.
Bonnie Kilpatrick (BA Theatre 2007) worked as a theatre intern in Bath and London, England after graduation and resided in Key West for several years where she appeared in print, commercials and episodic TV such as this “Burn This.” Bonnie recently moved to Miami, FL to pursue additional performance and print/modeling opportunities.
Kay Butts (BA, Theatre 2003) is working in management for a major corporate office in Atlanta. Kay also majored in Communication Studies at UM.
Timon Brown (BFA Technical Theatre 2003) is the Technical Director for the American Stage Festival in Florida.
Tim Batten (BFA Acting/Directing 2003) is an actor in Atlanta where he has performed extensively with various theatre companies there, as well as extensively in TV and Film including an upcoming new project for HBO.
Carter Robins (BFA Technical Theatre/Scenic Design 2004) resides in Chicago and co-owned Crosstown Scenery, building scenery for many Chicago based organizations for many years. While at UM, Carter compiled extensive TD and design credits.
Matt Reece (BFA Acting/Directing, 2001) has worked regionally at Equity theatres such as the Warehouse Theatre in SC and Orlando Shakespeare Festival. He is currently a paralegal in SC where he continues to perform with Warehouse on a regular basis.
Mary Kate McLaurine (BFA Musical Theatre 2016) toured the US and Internationally extensively with Missoula Children’s Theatre, and now Director of Education where she teaches and directs at the Stage Center School of Performing Arts in Louisiana.
Remi Newhouse (BFA Acting/Directing 2001) graduated from the M.A. program in Theatre at Portland State University. He resides in Portland where he has performed with various local companies, and is also a playwright.
Mary Barrett (BFA Acting Directing 2008) has worked in various management and youth program leadership positions, and is currently pursuing TV and film acting opportunities in Atlanta.
Zach Clemons (BFA Musical Theatre 2010) has performed at UNTO THESE HILLS where he was an actor, co-dance captain and fight captain. Zach acted professionally for Birmingham Children’s Theatre and Red Mountain Theatre Company in Birmingham, and also works extensively and full-time in film, TV and commercials as an Atlanta based actor for several years. Zach is represented as a model and actor by the Evolution Talent Agency in Atlanta.
Birmingham/Alabama
Chris Sams (BFA Acting/Directing 2006) resided in Los Angeles for six years where he appeared in films, web series and acclaimed theatre productions such as RENT, THE BOYS IN THE BAND and REVOLVER. Chris also performed in the summer 2012 NY International Fringe Festival. His film OCCUPYING ED played at many festivals from Birmingham to London. In fall 2009, Chris played the lead role of Leo Frank as a guest artist in our co-production of PARADE at the Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham and again in fall 2015 as “Frank n’ Furter” in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. Chris has worked professionally at many venues since returning to Birmingham 2 years ago, including Birmingham Children’s Theatre, City Equity Theatre and Red Mountain Theatre Company (including NEXT TO NORMAL and MY FAIR LADY directed by UM Theatre Chair David Callaghan).
Griffin Hood (BA 2006) is a writer, producer and actor. He has performed in a number of regional and LA indie films and his short film, MR. EXTION, was accepted at numerous festivals across the U.S. Griffin was based in LA for several years and he co-produced and wrote the feature film THE BAYSIDE OUTLAWS starring Eva Longoria, Billy Bob Thornton and Andre Braugher. While at UM, Griffin performed in and co-produced numerous local films in the Birmingham area. He is currently a HS drama director in the Gulf Shores area and continues to do acting work on TV and Film.
Jalen Brown (BFA Musical Theatre 2015) acted professionally for Red Mountain Theatre Company while at UM and continued to work for the company after graduation as an actor and assistant stage manager, most recently in MY FAIR LADY (as well as an actor for Birmingham Children’s Theatre). Jalen is also the Office Coordinator for LAH Real Estate.
Hannah Mansfield ((BFA Musical Theatre 2015) acted professionally for Red Mountain Theatre Company after graduating from UM including a leading role as the novice in SISTER ACT. She currently teaches educational theatre workshops in Mobile, AL.
Eric Browne (BFA Acting/Directing 2007) is a full-time HS Drama Teacher and Director at Baker HS in Mobile, AL, and is very active as an actor and director in various theatres around Mobile. He was also worked as a guest director at Southern Alabama University. While at UM, Eric directed THE ALCHEMIST for UM Theatre and also original musicals for College Night. Eric was recently appointed as the Artistic Director of the Joe Jefferson Playhouse in Mobile.
Blair Dyson (BFA Acting/Directing 2003) is the Drama Director at Prattville High School near Montgomery, AL, where he teaches theatre classes and directs plays and musicals. Blair also acts directs in theatres around the Prattville area.
Leah Luker (BA Theatre 2005) worked on the full-time production staff at Birmingham Children’s Theatre for many years, where she also directed various shows and tours. Leah has performed professionally in Birmingham with Red Mountain Theatre Company, City Equity Theatre and the AL premiere of GREY GARDENS. She has been an AEA Stage Manager and frequently performs professionally in Birmingham. Leah also works for Rent Monster in Birmingham.
Hunter Lawley (BA Theatre 2006) was a full-time musician/songwriter performing in AL and the Southeast. Hunter has recorded 2 CDs of his original music to date. He currently is a booking agent for entertainment acts around the US.
Austin Carpenter (BA Theatre 2004) was Technical Director for Red Mountain Theatre Company in Birmingham, AL and currently freelances as a theatre designer.
Amy Johnson (BA Theatre 2004) has performed professionally in Birmingham with Red Mountain Theatre Company in many leading roles, including “Ursula” in THE LITTLE MERMAID, BIG FISH and SISTER ACT, and MY FAIR LADY directed by Theatre Chair David Callaghan in summer 2019. Amy appeared as Mrs. Phagan in UM’s co-production of PARADE at the Virginia Samford Theatre in fall 2009, and was a guest artist in UM’s production of URINETOWN in spring 2018.
Nick Crawford (BA Theatre 2004) regularly performs with his improvisation troupe Ugly Baby and various theatre companies around Birmingham, including recent professional productions with Red Mountain Theatre company such as LES MISERABLES. BIG FISH and as Alfred P. Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY. He is a production assistant at Vazda Studios and appeared as Rosser in UM Theatre’s co-production of PARADE.
Kelsey Sherrer (BFA Acting/Directing 2008) works for Regions Bank and has acted/directed extensively with various companies in Birmingham and also worked as an acting intern with the NJ Shakespeare Festival. Kelsey is on the Board of Theatre Downtown in Birmingham and directed a stage reading as a guest director at UM in spring 2018.
BJ Underwood (BFA Acting/Directing 2008) performed at the Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, as well as in JC SUPERSTAR and OKLAHOMA! BJ has performed professionally in THE LARAMIE PROJECT in Birmingham as well with Red Mountain Theatre Company, and also with other UM alums on the TV web series “Bug Spoon.” BJ was a guest artist at UM in the role of “Leonard’ in SEMINAR in spring 2019.
Libby Prendergast Medicus (BA Theatre 2004) works on staff at UM and is very active with the South City Theatre in Alabaster, AL as well as other local theatre companies.
Sara-Margaret Cates (BA Theatre 2002) is the Director of Performing Arts for Tuscaloosa Academy. She also serves as a guest director, designer, and playwright for local companies, including the Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre and Theatre Tuscaloosa. Recently, her original play The Blessed Event was chosen for production in honor of the Alabama Bicentennial and she was named the 2019 Druid Arts Award – Theatre Educator, honoring excellence in theatre education in west-central Alabama.
Karow Wilson received his MFA in Directing from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) and has worked in Italy at various residencies on creating devised and object theatre. Karow resides and works in Italy. He is currently back in the US and directing and acting based in Birmingham, AL.
Naomi Armand (BA Theatre 2010) moved to Japan where she works on stage and film. Naomi works with the Alpha Core Talent Agency in Japan.
Grace Dawson (BFA, December 2012) Grace Dawson moved to Los Angeles immediately after graduation to work in a professional internship at Disneyworld. She then pursued a part-time internship in a LA casting office while auditioning for acting projects. Grace has spent recent years teaching English in Japan and Thailand, and has toured Southeast Asia extensively.
Alumni Prior to 2000
Rebecca Luker has performed leading roles in Broadway musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, The Secret Garden, and Show Boat. She received a Tony Award nomination for her role of “Marion Paroo” in Susan Stroman’s The Music Man, and was last seen in Fun Home, Nine and Mary Poppins on Broadway. A Vocal Performance major at UM, Rebecca was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from her alma mater and was our May 2010 commencement speaker.
Rod Lemmond (BFA Scene Design 1998) received his M.F.A. in Scenic Design at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and is currently working as a NYC based professional Designer after spending several summers at the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival.
Actress Polly Holiday, who worked extensively in regional theatre, off-Broadway, and on Broadway. She is best remembered for her role as Flo on the long-running hit TV series, “Alice.”
Actress and director Greta Lambert is a long-standing company member and currently Associate Artistic Director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, where she also taught in their M.F.A. conservatory program. Greta conducted a workshop on acting Shakespeare for UM theatre majors in spring 2010 and again in fall 2016.
David Harwell received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois and worked as a professional set designer in Boston and NYC before accepting his current position as Theatre Director for the University of North AL. In 2001, he won an “Emmy” award for his scenic design on the PBS children’s show “Between the Lions.”
Renee Copeland is the Producing Director of Tennessee Repertory Theatre in Nashville.
Jim Gibbs received his MFA in Stage Management from American Conservatory Theatre and has worked as a professional stage manager regionally, on Broadway and in London on the West End. In fall 2015 Jim returned to Birmingham to take a position as Production Stage Manager with Red Mountain theatre Company.
Carl Dean is a Birmingham based actor, director, choreographer and theatre educator. He was the Co-Artistic Director of Magic City Actors Theatre for several years and has also choreographed productions of COMPANY, BABY, PARADE, RENT, CABARET and HEATHERS for the UM Theatre Department. Carl is also a High School Drama Director and educator and currently the head of the Jefferson County Theatre and Dance Academy.
Bill Murphy has been a professional actor in theatre in film based in Atlanta for many years.
Cameron Watson has acted and directed at leading theatres around the country and compiled extensive film and television acting credentials. He currently resides in Los Angeles and directed the feature film Our Very Own with his production company GADA films, starring Emmy winner Allison Janney. Cameron has directed many acclaimed theatre productions in LA and also teaches acting there.
Max Wilson was Assistant Head of Automation for Siegfried and Roy at the Mirage in Las Vegas and has worked in technical theatre positions around the country. He now works in sales for Tomcat USA, which provides equipment to touring shows, Broadway musicals and rock concerts.
