Visual Art Achievement Program (VAAP)
For District 4B
The Visual Arts Achievement Program provides local and state recognition for student achievement in the visual arts. The program is designed to offer encouragement to young artists, showcase their work, and offer opportunities for advanced training beyond high school. This art competition is sponsored every year by the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The University of Montevallo Art Department is proud to host this event on campus for District 4 B, which includes: Shelby County, Hoover, and Vestavia Hills schools.
The winners from each category of middle and high school art go on to the state competition in Montgomery. The categories are: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography/New Media, Mixed Media, Craft, and Sculpture.

Student artwork should have a VAAP student entry form attached to the back of the artwork. The VAAP Teacher Inventory Form will need to be filled out and turned in when dropping off artwork. |

RULES
- Each student may only enter one time
- Each teacher may submit up to 15 original works of art
- Artwork should be delivered to the UM Art Department office (Bloch Hall Room 206) during the week of Feb. 19 – 23rd and should arrive ready to display on a wall or pedestal. Framing is not required, matting or mounting for 2D works is encouraged.
After the state competition in Montgomery, the student work comes back to Montevallo for pickup. Students, parents, and teachers with art at the state competition are encouraged to attend the Awards Ceremony and Reception in Montgomery on April 11 at 1 pm RSA Tower.
CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS
| Craft | Defined by utilitarian function or implied function. Including, but not limited to ceramics, wood, glass, textiles/fabric, leather, jewelry, or other metalsmithing. |
| Drawing | Defined by mark-making with pigments held together in a solid medium. Most commonly a paper with marks made with graphite or charcoal. Including, but not limited to Graphite, Charcoal, Conte Crayon, Wax Crayon, Oil Pastel/bar, Marker, Pen, and Ink |
| Painting | Defined by the application of pigments held together in a liquid medium. Most commonly a canvas or paper with paint applied by a brush. Including, but not limited to Watercolors, acrylics, oils, tempera, encaustic, and gouache. |
| Photography / New Media) | Defined by works created with and through equipment and technologies, or with intentions to explore or investigate non-traditional materials for art making. Including, but not limited to photographs on film, digital photographs, digitally manipulated images, rendered or computer-generated images, short cinematic films, audio scapes, and multisensory installations. |
| Printmaking | Defined by the transfer of pigments through pressing or mechanical reproduction. Including, but not limited to Intaglio (etching, engraving, mezzotint, aquatint), lithography, screenprinting/serigraph, and relief block using wood or linoleum. |
| Sculpture | Defined by three-dimensional works of art focused on artistic expression or content, with no intention of utilitarian function. Including, but not limited to ceramic, wood, metal, plastic/resins/fiberglass, glass, and stone. |
| Mixed Media | Defined by the use of a variety of mediums or materials that have been combined, assembled, collaged, or formed. |
