At the University of Montevallo, the Foundations Program is comprised of a coordinated set of courses for students who are seeking degrees in art. These courses focus on the basic skills and creative processes, as well as the craft, critical thinking, research, and working skills that will aid student success in their chosen discipline. The studio courses for Foundations are Two Dimensional Design, Three Dimensional Design, Drawing I, and Drawing II. These courses are typically taken in the first year of college. The art history courses for foundations are History of Art I and History of Art II, which are usually taken in the second year. In addition to the practical and conceptual aspects of making and understanding art, the foundation’s sequence serves as the basic art awareness instruction for art majors, where art theory and practice are explored through examples of contemporary and historical art. The Annual Juried Foundations Show enables students to submit artwork for review by professional artists and curators. These exhibitions showcase the versatility and skill of Montevallo art students to the campus community, while simultaneously providing art students the important opportunity of viewing their work in a gallery context.
