Dr. John David Herron received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte after earning B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics from East Carolina University.
At UNCC, he was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate School Award for Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics and Science (2004). At the University of Montevallo, Dr. Herron received the College of Arts and Sciences College Teaching Award (2013).
His teaching experience ranges from topology and real analysis to finite mathematics and intermediate algebra. He has supervised undergraduate research projects in introductory Hilbert space theory, Banach space theory and invariant subspace theory.
His current area of research is in operator theory with particular emphasis on the existence of nontrivial invariant subspaces of certain operator algebras. Broader research interests include weighted conditional expectation operators, operator-theoretic quantum mechanics, the differential geometry underlying general relativity and mathematical physics in general.
